CINCINNATI – July 11, 2023 – Get ready to be wowed! Cintas Corporation (Nasdaq: CTAS) is proud to reveal the top 10 finalists in the 2023 America’s Best Restroom® contest. The 22nd annual contest celebrates businesses that develop and maintain innovative restroom facilities. Now through August 11, the public is invited to vote for their favorite finalist at bestrestroom.com.
“From rest areas to restaurants, this year’s list of finalists represents some facilities that people seek specifically for the restrooms,” said Julia Walsh, Marketing Manager, Cintas. “These finalists take pride in going above and beyond to provide clean, thoughtful and well-designed restrooms. We encourage the public to show their support for them by voting for their favorites now through August 11.”
The top 10 finalists in the 2023 America’s Best Restroom contest include (in alphabetical order):
1. Baltimore/Washington International (BWI) Thurgood Marshall Airport (Baltimore, Maryland): The newly constructed restrooms at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport maximize occupant capacity while enhancing the overall passenger experience. The entrance welcomes travelers with an aesthetic mural and seating area while they wait for their companions. The new restrooms feature bright, spacious, fully enclosed stalls for privacy, touchless fixtures and individual lactation, adult changing and family assist rooms. Each restroom features a state-of-the-art smart restroom system that integrates with color-changing, LED stall occupancy lights and digital signage at the restroom entrances showing current availability. The smart restroom system also provides real-time inventory tracking and usage counts for custodial services.
2. Clear Lake and Des Moines River Safety Rest Areas (Jackson, Minnesota): The Minnesota Department of Transportation Safety Rest Areas (SRAs) provides two new SRAs, paired to serve eastbound and westbound travelers, on I-90 near Jackson, Minnesota. Open 24 hours to the traveling public, the SRAs share a similar design language that focuses on cleanliness, durability, safety and inclusion, as well as strives to exceed the users’ expectations. The multi-user restrooms are designed without doors at their entries to allow for an increased sense of safety for users and to eliminate pathogen transfer. Dual restrooms for each gender enable access to one pair during cleaning. Family restrooms are designed to meet the needs of families, adults with special needs and users desiring gender-neutral facilities. Entrances to the multi-user restrooms are enhanced by large photographic murals illustrating detailed views of the prairie landscape by a well-known local photographer.
3. Drusie & Darr (Nashville, Tennessee): A show-stopping punctuation mark on the redesign of the two restaurants is a new ladies’ room, a counterpoint to the hotel’s famous 1930s-era Art Deco men’s room – for years one of Nashville’s most photographed spots. Taking its cue from the men’s room’s striped tilework in lime green and black, the new ladies’ room is lavishly decorated with striped walls and floors of variegated pink marble, arched doorways, rose gold-framed mirrors, pink fixtures, and glamorous lighting throughout, making it a stunning surprise that is equally as photo-worthy.
4. El Rio (San Francisco, California): Inclusive dive bar and San Francisco Legacy Business El Rio continues to elevate equity and access for all with two new dazzling restrooms: one ADA accessible and an adjacent two-stall stunner. Evoking a futuristic Tokyo-bound subway, they feature brightly colored and patterned tile and paint, backlit mirrors — including a full-length version with multiple lighting options — and sleek and modern sinks and fixtures. Brought to life by the genius of Principal Maryam Rostami and Associate Kate Thorson of TEF Design, the project is a true grassroots collaboration made possible by community contributions.
5. Frying Pan (New York, New York): Built in 1929, the Lightship “Frying Pan” is listed on both the New York State and Federal Register of Historic Places, as it is one of 13 lightships remaining from the more than 100 built. The ship’s nautical themed restroom is decked out in rivetted sheet metal and warm wood. Coastal light fixtures are mounted in each stall and above the large sink vessels. Hand painted artwork of the historic ship adds a nostalgic touch.
6. Hell ‘n Blazes Brewing Company (Melbourne, Florida): Don DiFrisco purchased a 120+ year old former hardware store and bank with the wild idea of renovating it and converting it into a fine craft brewery serving great gastropub food and craft cocktails. He wanted there to be no “waiting lines” for the ladies’ room as are common in many similar venues, so they undertook a plan that included numerous private stalls, each with its own chandelier. Tin ceilings mimic the building’s original tin ceilings found in the Tap Room. Plenty of sparkles complement the chandeliers and empowering messages adorn many of the walls. The floral floor tile is reminiscent of a bygone era. The mirrors and chandeliers above the sinks are all custom made in the company’s logo colors, adding a classy marketing touch. There is even a brown, velvet fainting couch in the corner. As the picture when leaving the ladies room indicates: “You are the fairest of them all.”
7. Juban’s Creole Restaurant (Baton Rouge, Louisiana): Juban’s Creole Restaurant believes everything should be intentional, including in the restrooms. Renovated in 2022, the restrooms in dark blues with pops of millennial pink create a backdrop for perfect selfies. A pale pink couch rests in front of a Cher quote in the women’s restroom. Meanwhile, guests can take their very own Juban’s branded photo strips in the photo booth outside the men’s and ladies’ rooms.
8. Little America (Salt Lake City, Utah): When visiting Little America Salt Lake City, experience a touch of glamour where each stall showcases its own crystal chandelier and floor-to-ceiling doors for total privacy. Every detail is meticulously designed, from the coordinated pink color scheme that unifies the carpet, imported Italian marble, wallpaper and curated artwork, to the intentionally hand-selected materials that elevate the space.
9. Rabbit Hole (Greenville, South Carolina): The restroom at the Rabbit Hole is a whimsical take on an Alice in Wonderland theme. From the moment you enter, you are engulfed in wall-to-wall framed images of various noble rabbits. A rose garden ceiling sits above and the words from an Alice in Wonderland audiobook are read over a speaker.
10. Snowbasin Resort (Huntsville, Utah): One of the oldest continuously operating ski resorts in the nation, Utah’s Snowbasin Resort features luxurious restrooms that are a sight to behold. The design exudes an elevated feel with Italian Carrera marble complemented with bronze and crystal chandeliers. In addition, the facilities feature hand-painted walls and provide plush hand towels. With floor-to-ceiling commodes, guests have the utmost privacy in their own individual, enclosed rooms. The pristine allure leaves guests feeling bad about entering them with ski boots on.
The top 10 finalists were selected based on cleanliness, visual appeal, innovation, functionality and unique design elements. The winner will be honored with a place in the America’s Best Restroom Hall of Fame and receive a Cintas UltraClean® restroom cleaning service and $2,500 in facility services or restroom cleaning from Cintas.
Last year, the Tampa International Airport won the title of having America’s Best Restroom for its high-design, spacious restrooms, coupled with quality craftsmanship and an inviting, yet durable, material palette.

Nominees for this year’s contest were judged on five criteria: cleanliness, visual appeal, innovation, functionality and unique design elements. The five finalists include:
Forest Pavilion Washrooms (Winnipeg, Manitoba): Forest Pavilion at Crescent Drive Park is a four-season structure constructed on Treaty One land in the floodway zone of the Red River, at Crescent Drive Park, in southwest Winnipeg. It is a first civic structure of its kind to apply protective FEMA flood design standards in Winnipeg. All materials below the flood-line can be completely submerged without decay. Sustainable building choices include native planting, the use of durable hot-dipped galvanized steel, mechanically fastened (so as to be easily replaced) rough-sawn fir that was sourced and milled using sustainable harvest practices, and super low-flow plumbing fixtures, LED lighting, and occupancy sensors to reduce consumption.
Hard Bean Brunch Co. (Port Moody, B.C.): Individual, gender-neutral stalls are framed in bright, yellow trim with matching signature yellow doors in this popular brunch spot’s washrooms. Painted navy blue with sleek, black or white tile sits below fun palm leaf wallpaper with a pink and navy theme. Each fully enclosed stall is equipped with a sink for full privacy. Don’t forget to check yourself out in the LED backlit mirror before getting back to brunching.
The Gathering Place Washrooms (Vancouver, B.C.): The Gathering Place is a vibrant community centre with a mission to serve Vancouver’s diverse population including people who are unhoused, individuals who are marginalized, seniors, newcomers, and the LGBTQ+ community. When the City of Vancouver tasked Carscadden Stokes McDonald Architects with renovating the Gathering Place’s existing washrooms, with support from the City and Gathering Place staff and stakeholders, they focused on creating universally accessible, durable, and unexpectedly stylish spaces for folks that might not otherwise have access to inviting and fun public washrooms. One of the washrooms features a custom-built footbath with a bench for quick cleaning, while fully accessible showers are also provided. Access to clean, safe, accessible washrooms is a human right; making them charming and chic in the process is just a great idea. Using surprising colour combinations in tile, paint, and grout, anchored by simple white floors, vanities, and huge round mirrors, the facilities were designed to be easy to maintain, keep clean and safe to use.
Yesterday’s Auto Gallery (Edmonton, Alberta): Start your engines to experience the memorable washrooms at Yesterday’s Auto Gallery. Canada’s largest Classic Car Museum features classically, clean washrooms. The car-themed washrooms include car photos on the wall, along with a picture of Fonzie “The Fonz” from “Happy Days” which will revive some old memories. Large white tile makes the space in this spacious washroom feel bright.
The Big Apple (Colborne, Ontario): Known for its tasty pies and fun family activities, The Big Apple’s slogan is, “A little bit of country, a whole lot of fun!” The same holds true for its washrooms. They are outfitted in rustic décor, including metal stars hung along the walls, decorative corrugated metal signs and mirrors framed by weathered wood. The wood-toned tile and stalls also add to the country vibe to make you feel right at home.

MISSISSAUGA, Ont.
Hard Bean Brunch Co. (Port Moody, C.-B.)

CINCINNATI — July 27, 2022 — From one of the busiest airports in the country to a restaurant within an old manufacturing building, Cintas Corporation (NASDAQ: CTAS), is proud to announce the top 10 finalists for the 2022 America’s Best Restroom® contest. The 21st annual contest celebrates businesses that develop and maintain innovative restroom facilities. Now through August 31, the public is invited to vote for their favorite finalist at www.bestrestroom.com.
“This year’s top 10 finalists include small and large businesses from diverse categories competing for the title of America’s Best Restroom,” said Julia Messinger, Marketing Manager, Cintas. “The public holds higher standards for the cleanliness and technology used in public restrooms which is why we’re proud to recognize these businesses that maintain clean and exceptional facilities.”
The 2022 America’s Best Restroom top 10 finalists include (alphabetical order):
Delaware Botanic Gardens – Dagsboro, DE Just a few miles from the Southern Delaware Beaches, an oasis of tranquility and beauty has been steadily cultivated at the Delaware Botanic Gardens at Pepper Creek. Designed by the local firm of SEA Studio Architects, the new restroom is situated gently at the threshold between the Meadow Garden and the Woodlands. The building combines contemporary forms and a thoughtful material palette in a structure that both enhances the landscape and serves its function as a fully accessible restroom. Natural cedar cladding makes the building feel at home, while floor-to-ceiling south windows provide natural light and transparency into what are typically stuffy, private spaces. Several didactic features on the exterior demonstrate simple stormwater management practices, including a rainwater collection cistern and rain chains that feed a “living” wall, dry riverbed, and rain garden. Lastly, the interiors boast a clean and contemporary look with modern tile finishes and floating, stainless-steel vanities. Without a doubt, the restrooms at the DBG are truly part of the unique garden experience.
Eberly – Austin, TX The restaurant’s entire design is centered around its cedar tavern bar brought in from New York City, and the restroom is also a nod to the bygone era when those bars were in vogue. Each stall has an illuminated old-school New York tavern vacancy light outside the door that turns off when you lock it. The restroom includes images from Grammy-winning music photographer Alan Messer. It is awash in Fine Paints of Europe’s Hollandlac Brilliant Paint in Dark Cobalt Blue.
Headlands Lodge and Spa – Pacific City, OR Headlands Lodge was designed to highlight its special spot on the Oregon Coast, and the same is true for its restroom. It features a dark, wave-like concrete sink with touchless faucets. Dark shiplap lines the walls along with modern wall sconces to match the restroom’s spa-like feel. Meanwhile, patterned floor tiles create a rustic, masculine tone.
La Pâtisserie – Charleston, SC Located inside the Hotel Bennett, the restrooms in this French themed patisserie are the closest to France you’ll get without hopping on an airplane. The chic gold-accented wallpaper and elegant wall sconces are as appealing to the eye as the bakery’s sweet and savory pastries. Above, decadent chandeliers light the way to fully enclosed, private stalls.
Newark Liberty International Airport Terminal B All-Gender Restroom – Newark, NJ This project provides a new restroom facility in a 1970’s-era terminal departure lounge area at Newark Liberty International Airport that was required due to inadequate capacity at the existing restrooms. The restroom design provides an exceptional experience for all passengers by eliminating the traditional amalgamation of restroom facilities through gender-based separation in favor of public environments that allow privacy for all users. An added benefit of this all-gender solution was the ability to accommodate a larger number of users than a traditional restroom configuration, with “potty parity” for all. Areas for traveling companion waiting and passenger reorganization are provided to compliment the private areas. Local imagery, integrated into the architectural treatment of glass and tile, establishes a sense of place to remind the users where they might have visited or what they might want to experience during a return trip. Sound and scent compliment the visual experience to create a calming environment.
5 Bistro & Bar – Sedalia, MO Housed in a restored 55,000 sq. ft. building from the 1800s, No. 5 Bistro & Bar is a lively environment colored by attentive and friendly service. The restaurant’s vibe pays homage to the history that is unique to the Original Plat area of Sedalia and can only truly be found where our city began. The building’s deep history is highlighted in the restroom which is outfitted with the original sinks, exposed brick, and penny floor tiles. Dramatic green subway tile and wall sconces provide a modern touch paired with vintage mirrors. The restroom is a beautiful combination of the building’s historic past blended with the experiential living of the modern twenty-first century.
North Hollywood Recreation Center – North Hollywood, CA The self-cleaning restrooms at North Hollywood Recreation Center are holding to its promise in a community with a large homeless population. They cut maintenance cleaning times considerably. The restrooms’ interior is sanitized automatically after a set number of flushes. Touchless features include toilet tissue dispenser, soap dispenser, faucet and hand dryer. Exiting the restroom is also touchless. Graffiti is easily removed from the stainless steel and porcelain interior. An alarm will sound off if someone attempts to stay inside for too long and the door will open.
Stone Mountain Public House – Stone Mountain, GA Located in the charming historic Village of Stone Mountain, GA, this restroom follows a fun, prohibition theme. The sink is made from an old whiskey barrel and features a beer tap handle to dispense water. The vinyl wood walls are adorned with prohibition pictures. There’s even a butler toilet paper dispenser.
Tampa International Airport – Tampa, FL Tampa International Airport’s Airside C showcases new high-design, spacious restrooms, coupled with quality craftsmanship and an inviting, yet durable, material palette. The entrance welcomes travelers to their uniquely-Florida experience. Boasting large graphics and a natural, deep blue stone, the undulating veining is reminiscent of waves crashing along the shore. Once inside, large format tiles skin the floors and seamlessly fold up the walls, bolstering the well-lit environment and furthering a “freshly cleaned” aesthetic. A wood-look wall tile adds warmth and softness for a balanced, resort-like feel. This “cockpit” provides guests with their own sensor-activating sink and soap, personal paper towel dispensers, and trash receptacle, all within an arm’s reach!
Tori Tori – Orlando, FL Modeled after the famous green restroom from “The Aviator,” the Tori Tori restroom will have other facilities feeling green with envy. The space is gorgeous with dark green hues and light touches of marbling. The rotating floral display behind the restroom doors make this the go-to place for taking mirror selfies and photos. Gold accented mirrors and faucets complement the green décor.
