Cintas Canada Announces Finalists for 2023 Canada’s Best Restroom Contest

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. — June 5, 2023 —On your marks, get set, vote! Cintas Canada, Ltd. invites the public to vote for their favourite washroom for the 2023 Canada’s Best Restroom contest. The public can vote multiple times now through July 7, 2023 at bestrestroom.com/Canada. The winner will receive $2,500 in facility services from Cintas to help maintain their award-winning washrooms.

The Canada’s Best Restroom contest highlights businesses that have invested in developing and maintaining exceptional washrooms. “We’re proud to highlight these five finalists that have invested in clean and unique washroom facilities to keep their guests coming back,” said Candice Raynsford, Marketing Manager, Cintas Canada. “We encourage the public to make their voices heard and support these businesses by voting in the contest.”

Nominees for this year’s contest were judged on five criteria: cleanliness, visual appeal, innovation, functionality and unique design elements. The five finalists include:

  1. Forest Pavilion Washrooms (Winnipeg, Manitoba): Forest Pavilion at Crescent Drive Park is a four-season structure constructed on Treaty One land in the floodway zone of the Red River, at Crescent Drive Park, in southwest Winnipeg. It is a first civic structure of its kind to apply protective FEMA flood design standards in Winnipeg. All materials below the flood-line can be completely submerged without decay. Sustainable building choices include native planting, the use of durable hot-dipped galvanized steel, mechanically fastened (so as to be easily replaced) rough-sawn fir that was sourced and milled using sustainable harvest practices, and super low-flow plumbing fixtures, LED lighting, and occupancy sensors to reduce consumption.
  2. Hard Bean Brunch Co. (Port Moody, B.C.): Individual, gender-neutral stalls are framed in bright, yellow trim with matching signature yellow doors in this popular brunch spot’s washrooms. Painted navy blue with sleek, black or white tile sits below fun palm leaf wallpaper with a pink and navy theme. Each fully enclosed stall is equipped with a sink for full privacy. Don’t forget to check yourself out in the LED backlit mirror before getting back to brunching.
  3. The Gathering Place Washrooms (Vancouver, B.C.): The Gathering Place is a vibrant community centre with a mission to serve Vancouver’s diverse population including people who are unhoused, individuals who are marginalized, seniors, newcomers, and the LGBTQ+ community. When the City of Vancouver tasked Carscadden Stokes McDonald Architects with renovating the Gathering Place’s existing washrooms, with support from the City and Gathering Place staff and stakeholders, they focused on creating universally accessible, durable, and unexpectedly stylish spaces for folks that might not otherwise have access to inviting and fun public washrooms. One of the washrooms features a custom-built footbath with a bench for quick cleaning, while fully accessible showers are also provided. Access to clean, safe, accessible washrooms is a human right; making them charming and chic in the process is just a great idea. Using surprising colour combinations in tile, paint, and grout, anchored by simple white floors, vanities, and huge round mirrors, the facilities were designed to be easy to maintain, keep clean and safe to use.
  4. Yesterday’s Auto Gallery (Edmonton, Alberta): Start your engines to experience the memorable washrooms at Yesterday’s Auto Gallery. Canada’s largest Classic Car Museum features classically, clean washrooms. The car-themed washrooms include car photos on the wall, along with a picture of Fonzie “The Fonz” from “Happy Days” which will revive some old memories. Large white tile makes the space in this spacious washroom feel bright.
  5. The Big Apple (Colborne, Ontario): Known for its tasty pies and fun family activities, The Big Apple’s slogan is, “A little bit of country, a whole lot of fun!” The same holds true for its washrooms. They are outfitted in rustic décor, including metal stars hung along the walls, decorative corrugated metal signs and mirrors framed by weathered wood. The wood-toned tile and stalls also add to the country vibe to make you feel right at home.

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. — June 6, 2022 —Cintas Canada, Ltd. invites the public to vote for their favourite washroom for the 2022 Canada’s Best Restroom contest. The public can vote multiple times now through July 8, 2022 at bestrestroom.com/Canada. The winner will receive $2,500 in facility services from Cintas to help maintain their award-winning washrooms.

The Canada’s Best Restroom contest highlights businesses that have invested in developing and maintaining exceptional washrooms. “We’re proud to recognize these five finalists for investing in clean and memorable washrooms,” said Candice Raynsford, Marketing Manager, Cintas Canada. “The public can show their support for these businesses by voting in the contest.”

Nominees for this year’s contest were judged on five criteria: cleanliness, visual appeal, innovation, functionality and unique design elements. The five finalists include:

  • Majesty and Friends (Edmonton, Alberta): Majesty and Friends’ motto is “FUN, FUN, FUN,” so their washroom needed to offer the happiest vibes. The bright mural was inspired by the happiest treat on earth – ice cream. The flooring is Atra Flooring from Liverpool, and the sprinkles are made by Urban Walls. Their building at Manchester square is the biggest Instagrammable spot in Edmonton. Pink toilet paper and a cherry brush? Yes, please! With sprinkles!
  • Niton Junction Petro-Canada (Niton Junction, Alberta): The Niton Junction Petro-Canada washrooms are clean and well-stocked. Inside this charming facility you will find completely touchless sanitary sinks and crystal lights giving an elegant, yet relaxed feel. The washroom stalls are fully enclosed, and each is decorated with a different decorative floor-to-ceiling wall tile and modern light fixtures.
  • Toronto Zoo – African Rainforest Washroom (Toronto, ON): The Toronto Zoo returns to the competition in hopes of taking the throne and furthering their mission of connecting people, animals and conservation science to fight extinction. The new washrooms in the Toronto Zoo’s African Rainforest pavilion offer guests the opportunity to imagine themselves under the leafy canopy of the African Rainforest, home to the Western lowland gorilla. Door handles resemble a gorilla’s leafy diet and overhead lighting peeks through a canopy of acrylic foliage cut-outs to set the scene and illuminate the wood-finish stalls beneath. Each all-in-one handwashing unit is uniquely designed with conservation and technology in mind and features a hands-free faucet, soap dispenser and hand dryer: just one of the accessibility features in this facility. Colourful landscape murals, a snake-inspired mosaic and the unique floor design were inspired by the rainforests of Africa and are accentuated by fine details like high-gloss accents, representing the humidity of the region, and the iconic gorilla silhouette depicted in the privacy screens brings guests closer to nature. The designers hoped to encourage the appreciation of our natural world, provide an excellent experience for guests, and leave them with the desire to realize the Zoo’s vision of a world where wildlife and wild spaces thrive.
  • Versante Hotel (Richmond, B.C.): Situated in Richmond, the Versante is a luxury boutique hotel that features a showstopping washroom. Decked out in gold accented accessories, the unisex washroom includes private, fully enclosed stalls behind glossy black doors. The walls are lined with black, marble tile. Vibrant-coloured Chinese lanterns hang above ceramic pedestal sinks with gold faucets. The large oval washroom was designed to offer guests a drama filled Instagram moment.
  • Rollick Co. (Black Diamond, Alberta): This washroom was created as the ‘best room in the house’ of this local skateboard, bike and fishing shop, with the intention of it being a conversation-starter and great place for a selfie. Painted from top to bottom by a local graffiti and tattoo artist, Garrett Eagles, the full-colour graffiti pays homage to skate culture, connection to place and the offerings of the shop. A frog pulling a jump off the skate ramp, a fish with legs riding a bike, a Sasquatch on a stand-up paddle board, a UFO, a large earth worm (fishing bait) and an ice fishing hole painted on the ground complete the escape. A large gold antique mirror dominates one wall, and an XOXO wooden shelf is filled with extra toilet paper. This washroom is a fun surprise and delight for any who pop into the shop for a bike tune-up, advice on where to hike or fish, or an e-bike or standup paddle board rental.

Cintas Canada Names Borden Park 2021’s Canada’s Best Restroom

Cintas Canada Names Borden Park 2021’s Canada’s Best Restroom

Borden Park wins $2,500 in facility products and services from Cintas

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario — Aug. 5, 2021 —Cintas Canada, Ltd. is proud to announce that Borden Park in Edmonton, Alberta, is the winner of the 2021 Canada’s Best Restroom contest! Borden Park will receive $2,500 in Cintas products and services to help maintain their award-winning washrooms. The washrooms will also be honoured with a place in the Canada’s Best Restroom® Hall of Fame.

Now in its 12th year, Cintas’ nationwide contest highlights businesses that have invested in developing and maintaining exceptional washrooms that are accessible to the public.

“We’re pleased to be recognized by Cintas for this incredible distinction,” said Nicole Fraser, General Supervisor of Planning and Monitoring, Infrastructure Operations at the City of Edmonton. “We recognize the need to provide access to safe and clean washrooms to the public. The Borden Park facility goes beyond that by serving as an art excursion surrounded by highly reflective glass, camouflaging the building among the trees.”

Designed by gh3* in Toronto, the Borden Park washrooms are at the core of the single-level pavilion surrounded by highly reflective glass. An integrated approach to environmental sustainability is evident in the choice of materials: wood, concrete and glass were selected for their durability, permanence and timelessness. The washroom features hands-free elements to reduce germs and a stainless-steel trough-style sink that prevents water splashing on the floor. The sleek washroom stands as a striking improvement on the typical concrete options, and a sign of outstanding design to come.

“Public washrooms play an important role for people who are on the go, but this contest proves not all facilities are created equal,” said Candice Raynsford, Marketing Manager, Cintas Canada. “Borden Park prioritized providing a clean and inviting washroom, and the public showed their appreciation by voting them Canada’s Best Restroom.”

Borden Park’s engagement throughout the contest played a critical role in driving votes for their location. In addition to promoting the contest via their social media page, they participated in several radio, TV and newspaper interviews. Their promotion resulted in the top spot in this year’s competition.

Nominees for this year’s contest were judged on five criteria: cleanliness, visual appeal, innovation, functionality and unique design elements. Online voting was open to the public June 7 through July 9. The other finalists (in alphabetical order) include:

  • Surrey Park – Surrey, British Columbia
  • Sweet Market Esso Station – Red Deer, Alberta
  • The ROOFTOP – Calgary, Alberta

Cintas Canada Unveils Five Finalists in the 2021 Canada’s Best Restroom Contest

Cintas Canada Unveils Five Finalists in the 2021 Canada’s Best Restroom Contest

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. — June 7, 2021 —Cintas Canada, Ltd. invites the public to vote for the five finalists in the 2021 Canada’s Best Restroom contest! The polls are open now through July 9 at www.bestrestroom.com/Canada. The facility that receives the most votes will win $2,500 in facility services from Cintas to help maintain their award-winning washrooms.

Cintas’ nationwide contest highlights businesses that have invested in developing and maintaining exceptional washrooms. “These five facilities demonstrate a commitment to prioritizing hygiene and customer service – especially as cleanliness is so important right now – combined with creativity and whimsy not usually seen in washrooms,” said Candice Raynsford, Marketing Manager, Cintas Canada.

Nominees for this year’s contest were judged on five criteria: cleanliness, visual appeal, innovation, functionality and unique design elements. The five finalists include:

  1. Toronto Zoo – Toronto, ON

Designed with the Toronto Zoo’s mission of connecting people, animals and conservation science to fight extinction in mind, the new washrooms in the Zoo’s Tundra Trek feature iconic Canadian species. The design draws on inspiration from our natural world for its fresh yet familiar atmosphere. From the cool blue mosaic walls that represent the calm transition of horizon to sky, to the dark and dramatic overhead features that represent the vast night sky across the tundra, no detail is too small. Each handwashing unit features a hands-free faucet, soap dispenser and hand dryer. The trough-style sink eliminates water splashing on the floor and includes hooks on the outside of the counter to hang a purse, backpack or coat. This state-of-the-art facility modernizes the Toronto Zoo’s guest experience in a visually stunning way.

  1. Surrey Park – Surrey, BC

The intent for the park washroom was to create a playful, durable, safe facility that works well within the City of Surrey’s park contexts. The washroom was designed to be universally accessible, hands-free with no-touch fixtures and configured for solar power. It also features public art panels on all four sides of the structure. The design employs a distinct form, strong colours and unique use of materials.

  1. Sweet Market Esso Station – Red Deer, AB

The washrooms at Sweet Market Esso boast decorative high-end tiles and five-star finishes, giving the restrooms a classy feel, mimicking a fancy hotel suite in Italy rather than a convenience store restroom. These washrooms are always a topic of customer conversation in the store where selfies take center stage. The constant comments regarding the awe of it all – plus the extreme cleanliness – are great reminders of the sheer elegance and grandeur these restrooms provide for the customer.

  1. The ROOFTOP – Calgary, AB

The ROOFTOP restaurant is a unique “weather managed” outdoor patio experience located in downtown Calgary. The adjacent indoor washrooms were designed to be inclusive, engaging and distinctively unique. As you enter “The Alley” you are greeted by a life-sized bobblehead re-imagined as your personal concierge. Walk in to immerse yourself in the funky and fun graffiti wallpaper sections taken largely from the “John Lennon Peace Wall” originally created in Prague. Elements of surprise abound throughout these unusual washrooms, including the porta-potty door in the “Mostly Men” area and hidden selfie walls.

  1. Borden Park – Edmonton, AB

Designed by gh3, the washrooms are at the core of the single-level pavilion surrounded by highly reflective glass. An integrated approach to environmental sustainability is evident in the choice of materials: wood, concrete and glass were selected for their durability, permanence and timelessness. The washroom features hands-free elements to reduce germs and a stainless-steel trough-style sink that prevents water splashing on the floor. Cintas Canada Crowns Westview RV Park Canada’s Best Restroom

Alberta campground awarded $2,500 from Cintas Canada

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. — September 30, 2020 — RV there yet? Cintas Canada, Ltd. is proud to name the Westview RV Park in Wetaskiwin, AB the 2020 Canada’s Best Restroom® winner. The public voted the Westview RV Park the best public washroom in the country, earning it the top prize of a Cintas UltraClean™ restroom cleaning service and $2,500 in Cintas facility services to keep its washrooms Ready for the Workday®. The washrooms will also be honoured with a place in the Canada’s Best Restroom® Hall of Fame

“We’re blown away by the outpouring of votes to help us earn the title of Canada’s Best Restroom,” said Carol Crick, co-owner and operator, Westview RV Park. “We invested a lot of time into creating clean and comfortable washrooms for our customers. Our luxurious facilities are one of the main reasons travelers choose to stay at our campground.”

The washrooms at the Westview RV Park recently underwent a major makeover. Westview wanted to give its customers the five-star treatment and make them feel comfortable while staying at the park. The epoxy floors are textured for less slips and rounded corners were created for ease of cleaning. Meanwhile, concrete countertops and fancy tile make these the most unbelievable campground washrooms anywhere.

“Travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic have many Canadians renting or buying an RV for their family getaways,” said Sonia Mendes, Senior Marketing Manager, Cintas Canada. “When travelers visit the Westview campground, they’ll be impressed by the clean and pleasant washroom experience.”

The Westview RV Park’s engagement throughout the contest played a significant role in driving votes for their location. They drove awareness via their social media page as well as participated in several radio, TV and newspaper interviews. Their promotion resulted in thousands of proud employees and caring customers voting for them throughout the contest.

Now in its 11th year, the Cintas Canada’s Best Restroom contest shines a spotlight on businesses that go the extra mile to create the most memorable restrooms imaginable. The contest is open to any non-residential restroom in Canada that is accessible to the public.

The 2020 finalists were selected based on cleanliness, visual appeal, innovation, functionality and unique design elements. Online voting was open to the public from July 13th through August 14th, which produced the following results:

  • Westview RV Park – Wetaskiwin, AB
